A Work of Art

Last week Apple launched the latest in their innovative products - a foldable phone. 

They’re not the first, but they’ve become the biggest company in the world designing some of the most innovative technology products. 

It’s an interesting word: design.

It’s a staggering thought, that the thousands of objects we interact with everyday were all once simply a drawing. Toothbrushes, chairs, carpet, pencils, butter containers, fridges, cars, clothes, toys, toothpicks, books - they were all carefully designed by someone.
 
German designer Dieter Rams says there are ten essential rules of good design:
          1. Good design is innovative
          2. Good design makes a product useful
          3. Good design is aesthetic design
          4. Good design will make a product understandable
          5. Good design is honest
          6. Good design is unobstrusive
          7. Good design is long-lived
          8. Good design is consistent in every detail
          9. Good design is environmentally friendly
          10. Good design is as little design as possible

Note how Dieter's ten rules all speak to design which suits the contours and principles of nature itself.

God is good designer. Not only did he create humankind in his image, but he’s not finished with us yet. In Ephesians 2:10 we are told that,
          "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

The Greek word for workmanship is poiema, meaning a work of art, handiwork, or poem.

On Sunday I look forward to sharing how it is that God grows, matures, develops and crafts our lives and identities like a work of art.
